"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne"
Chapter Four
Chapter Summary
They were not children at all, at least not all of them, there was only men no women. Gretel thought they were in the countryside, but, the bare and ugly earth gave it away and proved they were not. Both Bruno and Gretel came to the conclusion that those were not the children that they would want to play with. It looked as if the children never took a bath. With that, Gretel left the room and went back to hers to continue putting up her doll collection.
Reaction
I thought Gretel should have known better than to say it was the countryside. Or what she saw probably came as a shock and she jumped to conclusions. Why would Bruno think that the filthy children were rehearsing for a play when soldiers were screaming at them and the children were crying. What is obvious is that Bruno might ask someone about the camp.
