Chapter Five
Chapter Summary
There was one thing to it and that was to ask father. He had not left with Bruno and the family, instead Father left a few days earlier. On the last morning in the house, Mother stopped before leaving. Tears were forming in her eyes. She did not want to go. An hour after they arrived at the Out-With, Bruno still had not seen Father. Downstairs, soldiers were gathered in fathers Office trying, all at once, to get fathers attention. Before they left, all of them, including father; stood in a row together like toy soldiers and their arms shot out in the same way that father taught Bruno too salute, the palm stretched flat, moving from their chests up into the air in front of them in a sharp motion as they cried out two words that Bruno had been taught to say whenever anyone said it to him. Now, it was Bruno's turn to have a talk with Father. he spoke to him about moving back and lastly about the children outside his window. Father said that they were not people; at least not what they think people are. In one swift move, Bruno and Father stuck out their arms and said the two words Heil Hitler. Something Bruno thought, meant "Well goodbye for now and have a pleasant afternoon."
Reaction
Okay, Bruno should at least know who Hitler is. He should even know what heil is. I thought Father should at least tell the children the truth. The things that people are doing to other people.
